GPS Satellite Signal Indoors – Who Needs It?

Very good question! When I first heard of GPS satellite television signal repeaters – devices that allow you to use GPS-enabled devices inside a building – My spouse and i didn’t quite “get it”.

I mean, if My spouse and i could pick up GPS DEVICE signals inside my house my TomTom works just as well as if it was outdoors. Mmmm – even in a 3AM stupor I can find my bathroom in time to avoid a significant disaster – without the need for a satelitte system.

Therefore i set about finding out who would gain from a GPS dish signal while indoors; We soon found out that the old maxim “the more you look, the greater you see” is never more relevant than in this context. Indoor Navigation Systems

Aside from the light-hearted, somewhat flippant example of using TomTom (other satnav devices are available) to find the bathroom, there is a more severe and compelling side to the story. Needless to say, using satnav in the home does not qualify as a persuasive reason to utilize a GPS repeater system. 

Initially – let’s define a GPS Repeater System: A repeater is a device that relays GPS indicators to the indoor location that isn’t normally obtainable. There is an outdoor antenna to pick up the GPS satellite signs from your rooftop, and a coaxial cable that carries the signal inside the building to a tiny, mains-powered, repeater unit. The repeater unit re-radiates the GPS signal inside home, generally covering a radius of up to 20 metres.

Consider the pursuing applications and see if any other situations where indoor GPS signal would be useful (or even crucial) spring to brain.

– Fire & Save Stations: A repeater system installed in a fire place station ensures that dish navigation equipment in relief vehicles is “locked on” to the GPS satellite tv service at all times while indoors. Which means that when they exit the train station “on a shout” the satnav devices need not hang on maybe three or four minutes to acquire the satellite signals – possibly qualifies as a “crucial” situation.

– Aircraft Arranging Hangars: Indoor GPS transmission allows on-board satellite course-plotting equipment to be examined indoors without needing to push the aircraft outside in order to pick up a signal. Maybe not important in the life-or-death sense, but would save a lot of time and effort if aircraft can stay inside until totally tested and able to go.

Useful as opposed to crucial; however easy to see the benefits.
