This kind of November will be my sixteenth-year anniversary of starting my own human resources consulting business. As We look back on the years, I am pleasantly surprised about what I accomplished and learned. If you are thinking about starting a small business, read on! Northern Drives
I always dreamed about having my own business, talked to friends about it, and imagined how it might be. But it was only after two women gave me a force, which i started doing rather than dreaming. First, my ex – boss said to myself, when we were both thinking about moving on, “I never looked for a job, I gone out and created my own. ” Given her advice, I hired a business coach to help me map out my next career steps. My own coach saw my gumptiouspioneering, up-and-coming spirit and encouraged me personally to get started on a business. And so I moved from daydreaming to doing.
The preliminary few months of my business I spent establishing up a legal framework, registering the business name, implementing a fairly easy accounting system, setting up a business checking account, establishing a line of credit and obtaining business insurance. Every single item was time eating but not difficult. The more difficult work was writing my business plan and marketing plan. I actually talked to professional co-workers and volunteers at the Small Business Administration and SCORE, and read catalogs on marketing. The process was slow because I actually was learning along the way, but I now use both business and marketing plans as daily roadmaps to guide my actions. One of the easier and fun parts of the first few months – for myself, was dealing with an artist to create an emblem, business cards, stationery, products / services brochure and Web site.
I actually also started networking – an activity that never ceases. There are many organizations to join. The trick is finding out which ones to choose. My spouse and i finally decided on being associated with a half a dozen organizations, which can either bring me business or help me find out about building my business or both.
One of the activities I labored on for months was my “elevator pitch, ” which is answering the question, “What will you do? ” so the listener understands and is interested. Now when people ask, I say, “I help people build great careers and help leaders build great companies. ”
I also put in a lot of time creating processes to make my business run like a well-oiled machine. I actually have processes for making sales calls, following up, writing proposals and considering the results of the work I do.
Also, three college or university students approached me, and wanted to assist me as interns to learn my business also to help them with their careers. Having interns adds supervisory and training time, but their ideas and enthusiasm has paid off. Actually my business tag line, Know-how. Best now, came out of a meeting through which we reviewed my marketing plan.
At a networking appointment, a colleague suggested that I consider joining the Women’s Business Development Middle. After looking into it, I had formed my business accredited as a women’s business enterprise. Additionally to getting together with other women business owners, I gained entry to a member directory of businesses that are enthusiastic about doing business with women business owners.
For me, the biggest likelihood of starting my own business was financial. I went from a steady paycheck to a roller coaster drive of payments. Before starting my business, I lay down with my children and asked for their support to ride out the slow months. My partner and youngest child were supportive; my teenager who loved new clothes and CDs, etc, needed prodding. But since my most ancient child has graduated from college or university and is also making her own career decisions, I actually see my move as a way to show her how to have her dreams.
