To Publish Or To Self Publish

Naturally, traditional publishing does not insure excellent quality. Or does self-publishing suggest second-rate quality. Such a simplified representation belies the gray area in between. As anyone can become self-published, regardless of aptitude, it is logical to believe that there are more low quality self-published literature, because there is no doorkeeper to screen away inadequate talent. Taking this a step further, since anyone can self-publish; poor writers receive no self-employed feedback. All authors require feedback in order to discover and solution areas in need of improvement. Some new writers assume that trade publishers are inaccessible. This concept falls short of may well foundation. Obviously there are many high quality self-published books and some low quality trade released books. But such a statement cannot be used to boost the reputation of self-published books. This kind of perception runs short on logic. Trade publishers are the gatekeepers of quality, while no talent is required at all to self-publish. Still, many perceptive non-fiction writers who have the time and ability to market and sell their books are seriously influenced by self-publishing’s financial rewards. But, this writer must be willing to conduct what amounts to almost a full time job in preparing their book for self-publishing sales.

The self-published author must not only own excellent writing skills to achieve success, this individual or she must also have excellent graphic fine art talent for cover design. Although it should not matter, a book’s cover is a crucial sales criterion. The self-published publisher must have deep contacts with distributors and merchants. Most new authors do not. The book must quickly appear on the Internet sites of Amazon online marketplace, Borders, Barnes & Manager, Powell’s, and so on The self-published author must successfully engage distributors throughout the world, since widespread distribution is a key aspect of revenue achievement.

Most publishing yourself online organizations offer little in the way of marketing, beyond inserting the cover and a description in their website. In fact, books will not sell unless they are given away internationally, available with all major retail Internet websites and on the shelves of bookstores.

The self-published creator must also have the talent and time to create and administer a successful viral marketing advertising campaign. The writer must create and maintain Internet web sites, promote their book through dozens of social marketing sites and keep the publication at retailers. They must write articles of the reserve (or a related topic) and have them released on popular Internet sites and Blogs. They must research, acquire and use appropriate keywords and phrases, so that search engines will see the book and related articles. They must Blog and write on others’ Websites, promoting the book. This demands a great package of time and work.

In addition, the self-published author must arrange for book tours, book contracts, bookstore visits and create radio and tv set multimedia exposure. The author must obtain reviews from essential sources and promote the book through organizations, newspaper publishers and magazines. In most cases, the regular publisher, who already possesses the expertise, connections and experience, will accomplish these critical responsibilities; and they will be accomplished faster than a self-published author can complete the duties. If a self-published author lacks the time, connections and skill to accomplish all of these critical tasks, they should continue to promote their writing to traditional publishers. Unless, of course, the author only desires a nice book together with his or her name into it for their coffee desk. In case the author desires that folks look at the book, or they wish to earn earnings from it, then the company publisher is best.

It is far from my intent to condemn self-publishing. For experienced, identified and talented authors who write non-fiction, and who have time and potential to accomplish each of the responsibilities mentioned above, self-publishing might be the best opportunity. However, for an unskilled writer who works somewhere else full-time and who produces fiction, it can be the wrong way to publish. Instead, the creator should hone and improve their skills through writing courses and by participating professional feedback about their skills.

Finally, many new authors give up investment publishing far too soon. They disregard submission suggestions posted on the publishers’ site. They send writers a manuscript rather than a proposal. Or, they send a bad proposal. At a minimum, publishing proposals must include a market analysis, competitive analysis, biography, manigance, marketing analysis and sales attributes.
